Grain boundary segregation transitions and critical phenomena in binary regular solutions: A systematics of complexion diagrams with universal characters

چکیده
A systematics of grain boundary (GB) segregation transitions and critical phenomena has been derived to expand the classical GB theory. Using twist GBs as an example, this study uncovers when layering vs. prewetting should occur how they are related one another. Moreover, a novel descriptor, normalized strength (phi_seg), is introduced. It can represent several factors that control segregation, including strain bond energies, well misorientation for small-angle (in mean-field approximation), which had be treated separately in prior models. In strong system with large phi_seg, first-order at low temperatures become continuous above roughing temperatures. With reducing gradually merge finally lump into without quantized layer numbers, akin Cahn's critical-point wetting model. Furthermore, complexion diagrams universal characters constructed counterpart exemplar Pelton-Thompson regular-solution binary bulk phase diagrams.

Effect of grain boundary character on segregation-induced structural transitions
Segregation-induced structural transitions in metallic grain boundaries are studied with hybrid atomistic Monte Carlo/molecular dynamics simulations using Cu-Zr as a model system, with a specific emphasis on understanding the effect of grain boundary character. With increasing global composition, the six grain boundary types chosen for this paper first form ordered complexions, with the local s...

متن کاملAbnormal grain growth in the Potts model incorporating grain boundary complexion transitions that increase the mobility of individual boundaries
The Potts model of grain growth was adapted for the purpose of simulating abnormal grain growth (AGG) resulting from grain boundary complexion transitions. The transition in grain boundary structure between specific complexion types results in changes in properties. Where the transitions decrease energy and increase the mobility of boundaries, AGG occurs provided that such transitions predomina...
متن کاملRelating Grain Boundary Complexion to Grain Boundary Kinetics II: Silica-Doped Alumina
This second paper in a series describes the relationship between grain growth kinetics and grain boundary complexions in silicadoped alumina. Dense high-purity silica-doped alumina samples were annealed for various times in the temperature range of 13001 and 19001C and their grain growth behavior was quantified. Four different grain boundary complexions were observed in silica-doped alumina, al...
